Norton City Schools has been awarded a number grants over the past several years. These grants help us provide resources and programs that we normally would not be able to provide. We are grateful to staff members that have taken the time to write these grants as well as to businesses and foundations that have awarded them. They provide fantastic opportunities for our students!
Here are some of the programs/resources we have received grants for:
- NMS Girls Who Code after school program $4,000 (see below)
- NMS Panther Programming $6,700
- $25,000 to purchase Chromebook cart for science lab, science lab probes, and update science lab equipment
- S.T.E.A.M. grant for preschool and kindergarten (see below)
- Grant for $1,000 to pay for bus to take 40 8th graders to STEM day at Cedar Point
- $10,000 for interdisciplinary unit for 8th grade team about the Revolutionary War
- $22,000 to purchase quadcopters for STEM class, MARS Yard, and field trip to Challenger Learning Center in WV
- BWC Safety grant to purchase a Hydraulic scissors lift and electric basketball wenches at NES worth $16,686
- $3000 grant from Dollar General Literacy Program for the purchase of new books and instructional supplies for the summer reading club
This after school program focuses on increasing interest in girls to pursue science and technology fields as a career. Studies show that girl only clubs for this topic increases their self-esteem and ability to succeed. We explore resources such as Khan Academy, Girls Who Code, Scratch, Made with Code and more!
S.T.E.A.M. Grant for Preschool
S.T.E.A.M. AHEAD! provides Norton’s preschool and kindergarten students with a project-based room that engages them in authentic activities which encourages problem-solving skills, social interactions and creativity using staff, family and community.
Norton Primary was awarded a grant from the GAR Foundation which enabled them to create a S.T.E.A.M. room for their students. It is a welcome addition to the building. The classroom emphasizes science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics exposure for all students. Teachers are working with one of NASA’s educational consultants, the National Inventors’ Hall of Fame, and local community members, to create a positive learning environment for all Primary students.
The room is utilized on a daily basis, ensuring all preschool and kindergarten students are exposed to what the S.T.E.A.M. stands for in the literal sense, as well as promoting authentic activities. We are certain that our S.T.E.A.M. room activities will have a positive impact on our students’ learning and citizenship.
